Image Art Eco Gallery
Last night I attended a private view at ArtEco Gallery in Wandsworth. In a show with three artists, it was the work of the artist Emer O’brien that I was most interested in.
Emer had cooked and then photographed four dinner parties influenced by the Dutch Masters still life paintings. The guests have left and only the messy leftovers of the consumed dinner remain. Four quiet, deserted dinner party landscapes, each suggesting one of the four seasons, hang on the gallery walls.
It’s not the first time I’ve seen work by artists similar to this, (see Caroline Hobkinson Das Grosse Fressen) of an abandoned dinner table and I often document the remainders of dinners I hold in my studio. (see last image)
But these are much slicker and glossier landscapes of food. Painterly and quite beautiful, evoking time past and present. Times shared and time alone.
